Sandwich: The Easiest Cape Cod Day Trip from the South Shore
Sandwich is a town I called home for many years, and because it’s just over the bridge and an easy drive down Route 3, it’s one of the easiest Cape Cod day trips from the South Shore.
The Sandwich Boardwalk
The boardwalk stretches across the marshes to Town Neck Beach and offers beautiful views in every direction.
The Sandwich Fish Hatchery
It’s fun to feed the fish; they go crazy.
Heritage Museums & Gardens
Something for all ages, they have a zipline, carousel, and more for kids. There are also beautiful gardens, history, and antique cars.
The Sandwich Water Fountain
One thing visitors might not know is that many Sandwich residents fill their water jugs at the town's natural spring water fountain. Growing up, my parents would send us with our 5-gallon Poland Spring water jugs to fill them. At the time, it was another chore, but now it’s a fun memory. If you want to experience a little piece of local Sandwich life, bring a container and give it a try.
The Sandwich Glass Museum
Live glassblowing demonstrations are a highlight and make it enjoyable for both adults and children.
The Sandwich Antique Center
A fun place to walk around, even if you aren’t into antique shops.
Scorton Creek
At high tide, we would jump from the bridge and float down the creek with the current, and then walk home when we got to the end of the creek.
It's a unique way to experience the area's salt marshes and natural beauty.
The end of the creek has a nice trail along the marsh, where you can see beautiful homes and explore tidal pools.
If you're not familiar with the tides or the area, planning the trip can be tricky. Reach out; I am happy to guide you or Rideaway Adventures, offer guided trips, and help with the logistics.
Restaurants
There are lots of good restaurants in town, but I love the atmosphere at Fishermen's View and Off the Grid. It's a great casual lunch option near Town Neck Beach.
Off The Grid
I hope you enjoy exploring Sandwich as much as I do. If you’re looking for even more Cape Cod ideas, be sure to check out my article, “Cape Cod: How We Actually Do It from the South Shore,” where I share a few other favorite destinations.
