Japanese Head Spa Treatments (And Where to Try One on the South Shore)

I kept seeing posts on local social media pages, “Where is the best place for a scalp spa treatment?” I had to see what all the rage was about, and decided to do some “research” for a blog post.

Japanese-style head spas (also called scalp spas or head spa treatments) are becoming increasingly popular in the U.S. and are rooted in wellness traditions focused on scalp care, relaxation, and stress relief. A typical treatment may include scalp cleansing, exfoliation, massage, steam, aromatherapy, neck and facial massage, depending on the location. Sessions often last 45–90 minutes and are designed to feel restorative and calming.

So… What Are the Benefits?

Charles David Salon & Spa, Hanover

Relaxation & Stress Relief

If you, like me, carry tension in your head, jaw, neck, or shoulders, the massage aspect alone was incredibly relaxing. Each one I tried was calming and restorative.

A Cleaner, Healthier Scalp

Many treatments include scalp cleansing or exfoliation to remove product buildup and excess oils, while supporting overall scalp health. Think of it a little like a facial, but for your scalp.

Healthy Hair Starts at the Scalp

You’ll often hear claims about hair growth. While there’s no miracle treatment here, some small research studies suggest regular scalp massage may help support thicker-feeling hair over time by stimulating the scalp and circulation.

A Rare Chance to Completely Unplug

This may actually be my favorite benefit. Most of us are constantly multitasking, scrolling, or rushing somewhere. Spending an hour doing absolutely nothing, just relaxing, was luxurious.

Final Thoughts

I am addicted and not proud of it. I would love to do it every week if my schedule and wallet allowed. I did add the mini facial treatment at each spot I tried, and felt it was worth the extra money. Having a mask on your face during the treatments made it that much more relaxing and indulgent. Each spa offered a different experience.

If you’ve been curious because you, too, keep seeing these all over social media, I’d say it’s worth trying at least once. At the very least, you’ll walk out feeling relaxed.

P.S. If you know of another location that offers this service, please let me know. I would love to add it to the list.

P.P.S. I haven't visited all of the locations listed above, but others who have been there say they enjoyed them.
